WHAT ARE HEAD LICE?
Head lice are tiny insects which live in our hair. Anybody can have them but it’s most common in children between 3 and 10 years of age. They don’t jump or fly as they have no wings. Contagion is produced through direct contact with the hair of an infected person or, although less likely, through contaminated objects. They feed on human blood several times a day and the females lay their eggs, or nits, in the warmest areas (nape of the neck, behind the ears and bangs).
HOW DO I GET RID OF THEM?
The symptom that usually starts alarm bells ringing is itching, especially at the neck and behind the ears. To check for head lice first wet the hair, as water makes it harder for the lice to move around and place a white cloth over the shoulders. If there are lice, the nits will loosen and fall onto the cloth as the hair is combed with the special nit comb.
